The chairman of the Likud party and Prime Minister in Israel's former cabinet Benjamin Netanyahu could name a Construction and Housing Minister from his party if re-elected in the parliamentary elections.
Previously, Likud's ultra-orthodox coalition partner Shas held the housing portfolio.
"Housing has become a national socio-economic issue of paramount
importance, and therefore the housing portfolio won't be handed over to a
sectorial party but remain in the hands of one of the MKs in the
Likud-Beitenu faction. We definitely won't transfer responsibility to a
sectorial party," Netanyahu said.
As PM, Netanyahu faced serious criticism after he had failed to deal with high apartment prices. Under his ruling, prices rose by 50 percent and according to many, most housing grants benefited the Ultra-Orthodox population of Israel.
