Abuse alert system enters into effect

An online system designed to identify children at risk of being neglected or abused begins functioning in hospitals across the UK.
Doctors and nurses in emergency and accident departments will be alerted by the Child Protection and Information System if children may be in danger or have received urgent treatment at other hospitals.
The government said that a common database will allow the kind of tragedies that followed missed warnings in the past to be avoided, although a proposal for a bigger database submitted by the previous government was shelved in 2010.
