Private daily newspapers are set to begin printing with the permission of the Myanmar government, in the country's latest effort to reform its widely criticised human rights record.


It is the first time since 1964 that private daily newspapers can be published in the country, with what is considered a major step towards relaxing constraints on free expression in the long-repressed nation.


Private dailies were forced to close after the late dictator Ne Win nationalised all private businesses. Up until that point, the circulation of private newspapers was a vibrant enterprise in the former British colony.
