It is the first time since 1964 that private daily newspapers can be published in the country, with what is considered a major step towards relaxing constraints on free expression in the long-repressed nation.
Private dailies were forced to close after the late dictator Ne Win nationalised all private businesses. Up until that point, the circulation of private newspapers was a vibrant enterprise in the former British colony.
