Fatah to mark anniversary in Hamas-run Gaza

The Gaza branch of Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas's Fatah party is set to mark its anniversary in the city after Hamas, which runs Gaza, authorised the rally.
The celebrations, the first since 2007, are seen as a sign of improved relations between the groups, which under Egyptian mediation reached a unity agreement in April 2011.
"We have agreed with (Hamas) prime minister Ismail Haniya that Fatah will celebrate its 48th anniversary on January 1 at the site of the Saraya," Fatah official Yehiye Rabba said.
The celebrations, the first since 2007, are seen as a sign of improved relations between the groups, which under Egyptian mediation reached a unity agreement in April 2011.
The conflict between Hamas and Fatah broke in 2007, when the Islamist movement seized control of Gaza after winning the Palestinian parliamentary elections in 2006.
The Fatah anniversary commemorates the first operation against Israel claimed by its armed wing then known as Al-Assifa, The Thunderstorm, on January 1, 1965.
