Australian analyst faces insider-trading charges

Trent Martin, an Australian financial analyst who allegedly took part in insider-trading, is brought before the US District Court in Manhattan. He faces up to 25 years in a US jail and a maximum fine of A$4.8 million.
Martin is accused of playing a key role in an insider trading scandal in 2009, in which he allegedly used non-public information from a corporate lawyer friend on IBM's acquisition of software company SPSS to buy shares. During that time he worked as a research analyst at a Connecticut brokerage firm.
After learning about the US Securities and Exchange Commission investigation in 2010, he fled Australia, which, according to several reports, he returned to in 2009 following fears of possible arrest in the US.
On December 22, Martin was arrested and charged in Hong Kong from which he was set to be extradited to the US to appear in court.
