The possession of marijuana is decriminalized in the US state of Colorado following the approval of the measure by state's voters in November 2012.
Under the new law anyone aged 21 and over will be allowed to carry up to 28,4 grams of cannabis. Individuals will also be allowed to grow small amounts for themselves. Smoking in public will, however, remain illegal.

Recreational cannabis has been allowed in Washington since December 6. Cannabis consumption for medical purposes was already permitted in both states and seventeen others. During the November elections, Massachusetts joined the list when it adopted a more lenient approach towards medicinal marijuana.
A system designed to control the cultivation and consumption of cannabis is still in the beginning stages of development. For now, the measures implemented are modelled on those that determine the sale and consumption of alcohol.
