Indian Court might suspend lawmakers accused of sex offences

India's Supreme Court hears a petition filed by former government administrator Promilla Shanker requesting to suspend from office all lawmakers who face sexual assault charges against women.
The hearing comes on the same day the high-profile gang rape trial is due to begin in the capital.
As the country is facing nation-wide protests that aim to see the government put a stop to sexual offences against women, Chief Justice Altamas Kabir agreed to hear the petition that could suspend all lawmakers from the national and state legislatures who are facing prosecution for crimes against women.
The petition also asks the court to force the national government to fast-track thousands of rape cases that have languished in India's notoriously slow court system for years.
The December 16 rape of a 23-year-old paramedic student sparked outrage across the country. Citizens have demanded stronger laws, tougher police action against those accused of sexual assault and a sustained campaign to change society's views on women. One of the first reactions of the government was to announce it would publish the details of thousands of convicted sex offenders.
