Starbucks opens its first outlet in Vietnam, as part of an on-going expansion by the US chain in Asia to counter stagnating growth in its home market.

Vietnam, the world's second largest coffee producer behind Brazil, is now the 12th Asian nation in which Starbucks operates. The world's biggest coffee-shop chain has already opened thousands of stores across the region.

The country already hosts a variety of other US chains, including Subway, KFC and Pizza Hut, all of which seek to capitalise on the rapidly growing retail market across the Asia-Pacific region.

The US company has said that it intends to establish 1,000 stores in China, 1,000 in Japan and a further 500 in South Korea by the end of the year.
