Russia launches a naval exercise, which the country's Defense Ministry described as the largest in decades.
The warships from Russia's Northern Baltic, Black Sea and Pacific fleets will stage the exercise to test their ability to interact outside Russian waters.
According the ministry, the training exercise will also include anti-terrorism and anti-piracy drills. Russian President Vladimir Putin said that his country needs a stronger army to protect its borders from foreign attempts to provoke conflicts. The move is part of Moscow's attempt to strengthen its military presence in the Mediterranean region.
It is not clear whether the naval exercise is in any way connected to the ongoing conflict in Syria.
