Funds for Sandy victims run out

US government's mandatory flood insurance programme has exhaust
its borrowing authority and is expected to run out of money to pay claims from
Hurricane Sandy.
Late December, the Senate passed a $60.2 billion storm relief bill that included $9.7 billion for federal flood insurance. However, House leaders surprisingly failed to bring the bill to a vote on January 1, stating the bill was to be left to the new Congress.
Speaker John Boehner has promised that the House will vote on January 15 on a $51 billion package. The gross expenditure is expected to be similar to the $60 billion deal that was delayed early January, with the $9 billion that was put to vote on January 4.
The votes come after a vigorous attack on the Republican-led house for a slow response to the needed aid.
