Nepal army chief Gen Gaurav Shumsher Rana embarks on his maiden visit to India at the invitation of his Indian counterpart, Gen. Bikram Singh. Gen Rana assumed the position in September 2012.


The agenda of the 10-day-long visit includes meetings with top Indian military and civilian officials and Indian President Pranab Kumar Mukherjee. Gen Gaurav Shumsher Rana will be awarded the title of honorary General of the Indian Army by President Mukherjee.


The armies of the two neighboring countries have maintained long-standing friendly relations. According to a tradition established in 1965, both armies have been conferring the honorary rank of General on each other's Army chief.
