Chuck Hagel sworn in as new Pentagon chief

Former US Senator from Nebraska and decorated Vietnam veteran Chuck Hagel becomes the new US defense secretary after the Senate finally approved his nomination on February 26.
The former Nebraska lawmaker, whose nomination was strongly opposed by leading Republicans, prevailed in a 58-to-41 vote, which represents the smallest margin since the position of defense secretary was created in 1947.
Hagel, who was nominated for the position by President Barack Obama on January 7, succeeds Pentagon chief Leon Panetta in Obama's second-term cabinet.
The former Republican senator has criticized discussion of a military strike on Iran by either the US or Israel and made a controversial comment about the pro-Israel lobbying groups in the US, referring to them as the "Jewish lobby". He is reportedly likely to support a more rapid withdrawal of US troops from the Islamic republic.
Hagel takes over the Pentagon at a time when the Department of Defense is facing budget cuts and a scaling back of the US-led war in Afghanistan.
