The 2013 World Rally Championship, the world's premier auto racing contest, kicks off with the 81st Monte Carlo Rally in the French Riviera.
The Monte Carlo race has its opening ceremony in Monte Carlo, but its organization is based in the French town of Valence. The usual racing tracks are marked out across Rhône-Alpes, the Provence and the Côte d'Azur near the Italian border. In total, the drivers race 465 km in wintry conditions to the finish at the Place du Palais, Monaco, at 11 a.m., on Sunday 20th January 2013.
This year's race attracts 84 contestants with multinational teams from a variety of European countries. The French driver Sébastien Loeb currently holds the winning record, reaching first place for the sixth time in 2012. The car brands represented include Škoda, Citroën, Volkswagen, Ford, Peugeot, Subaru and Mitsubishi.
