American singer, actress and comedienne Bette Midler returns to Broadway after a 30-year absence, starring in a one-woman show based on the legendary talent agent Sue Mengers.
The play, entitled I'll Eat You Last: A Chat with Sue Mengers, is the work of John Logan, writer of the most recent James Bond film Skyfall.
According to Logan, he only met Mengers once at a dinner party in 2007. This one encounter, however, was enough to leave a lasting impression and he credits the moment in which Mengers lit up a joint whilst simultaneously smoking a cigarette as the instant in which he felt driven to write the play.
Mengers, who died in 2011, is recognized as one of the first Hollywood super-agents, representing actors such as Michael Caine, Steve McQueen, Barbara Streisand and Faye Dunaway.
Midler rose to fame on Broadway and Logan claims that he had her in mind throughout the writing process as the actress who would play the part of Menger. He explained that for "a one-person show in particular you need someone who can hold an audience, who connects with an audience in a really deeply visceral way," arguing that Midler has exactly what it takes to portray this character.
