After the Indian government has ordered that no school in Delhi will hire any vehicle without police verification of its owner and crew, Delhi school buses are expected to install CCTV and compel staff to carry a photo identity card.

The measure was announced by the Special Task Force headed by India's Union Home Secretary, which was constituted to look into the safety issues of women in Delhi after the country was hit by a wave of protests following the gang-rape and murder of a 23-year-old student on a bus in the city.

"No school should hire any transport vehicle of any kind without the owner and the rest of the crew being verified by Delhi Police. Such order and the police verification thereof must be completed by February 1," the task force decided.

According to the new directions, every DTC and cluster bus should have a CCTV/Webcam and every member of the crew of a public transportation vehicle must have a photo identify card verified by Delhi Police.

A new order was also issued to Helpline No.100, which is now directed to send the nearest police car to the location of any call received. Additionally the task force decided to increase the number of lines available for Helpline No.100 from 60 to 100.

Delhi police was instructed to take off the road any vehicle that does not comply with the new directions.
