Psy, the South Korean star who set social-media
popularity records with his Gangnam Style YouTube music video, is to appear in a Super Bowl commercial for Wonderful Pistachios.
The flashy commercial, filmed in North Hollywood, is the brand's
first Super Bowl advert and will be Psy's first commercial aired in the US.
"The Super Bowl is way too big for me," joked Jai-Sang
Park, also known as Psy. "I never dreamed of being a singer in America, so I of course
never dreamed of being in a Super Bowl ad."
Psy's offbeat dance video ridiculing the upper-class lifestyle in South Korea has reached over 1.1 billion YouTube views.
Executives at Wonderful Pistachios are enthusiastic about signing
Psy. "He's penetrated the cultural consciousness of the United States,"
said Marc Seguin, vice president of marketing for Wonderful Pistachios,
the biggest nut brand for Paramount Farms. "We knew the Super Bowl would
require something really special to stand out."
As revealed by Psy, the mega-hit Gangnam Style will appear with different words
in the 30-second commercial.
