Mexico implements law to compensate drug war victims

Mexico implements a new law to trace victims of the country's brutal drug war and compensate the victims' families.

The law proposal was approved in April 2012 but former Mexican President Felipe Calderon objected to several clauses which resulted in a delay in signing the bill into law. 

The new country's President Enrique Peña Nieto signed the bill on January 9, giving a way to the creation of a fund to pay victims' relatives up to $70,000 per innocent victim killed in drug gangs attacks. 

Peña Nieto has pledged to reduce the criminal violence in the country that escalated after Calderon launched a war on drug cartels in 2006. The initiative triggered turf wars across the country, which some reports claimed to have resulted in deaths of more than 70,000 people.
