Bangladesh is due to carry out various technical and environmental evaluations in anticipation of the construction of the country's first nuclear power plant.
The project is to be financed by a set of loans provided by Russia. The first set of these loans is of $500 million, according to Russian President Vladimir Putin. The details of the project were revealed in January 2013 following a meeting between Putin and Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The power plant, to be set in the village of Ruppur located in the northwestern Patan district, will not be completed until the early 2020s. According to Sergei Kiriyenko, the head of the Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom, the plant will include two reactors of 1,000 megawatts.
The projects discussed by Russia and Bangladesh are also said to include a loan of $1 billion for Bangladesh to purchase weapons.
