US President Obama announces measures on gun violence, following recommendations made on Monday by US Vice-President Joe Biden's task force on gun violence. The proposal comes ahead of a deadline the President set following the mass shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.
As stated by Biden and multiple sources, recommendations could include universal background checks for gun buyers and updating databases with information about convicted criminals. The vice-president also revealed he had encountered widespread concerns over high-capacity ammunition magazines.
The longstanding US debate on gun violence gained momentum in the aftermath of the December 14 mass shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, that left 27 dead, most of whom children.
