Senegal to host Hissène Habré's trial

Senegal hosts the trial of former Chadian dictator Hissène Habré, who is accused of committing crimes against humanity in the 1980s.
The trial, which got a green light from Senegal's parliament in December 2012, is to take place in a special tribunal authorized under the African Union.
Following eight years of rule, Habré fled to Senegal in 1990 leaving behind a country strewn with mass graves. Faced with Senegal's inaction, the victims of the dictator's crimes turned to Belgium in 2001 requesting a trial for his crimes. Four years later, an international arrest warrant was issued, charging Habré with crimes against humanity, war crimes and torture.
Habré's trial is considered a major step toward Africa dealing with its own war criminals.
