South Korea may deploy Israeli-made precision guided missiles near its tense sea border with North Korea. The missiles will also be positioned on a disputed island shelled by the North in 2010, according to reports.

The South is said to deploy 50 to 60 Spike anti-tank missiles to two border islands in the Yellow Sea to protect the country from potential attacks from the North, the Chosun Ilbo daily cited a Seoul military official as saying.

The two islands are Baengnyeong, the closest island to the disputed maritime border, and Yeonpyeong, which was shelled by the North in November 2010 in an attack that killed four South Koreans, out of which two were civilians.

With its global positioning system technology and a range of 25 kilometres (15 miles), the missile, which was bought in a deal with Israel in 2011, is said to be capable of hitting North Korean artillery hidden in mountain caves.

The South's defence ministry spokesman declined to confirm the report.
