Japan lowers restrictions on beef imports

Japan is expected to relax restrictions on imported beef.
Since 2003, Japan has only imported meat from cattle that is less than 20-months-old. The tight limits on imported beef were put in place at the time due to concerns over mad cow disease, which had been detected in a herd originating from the US.
If the Japanese health ministry gives its approval, the cattle age limit will be raised from 20 to 30 months. The first beef imports that meet these criteria are expected to arrive in Japan in late February and early March.
The same age limits would also be applied to French-imported beef, which was previously completely banned.
