A former US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Mary Jo White, may become the Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) leader in the second administration of President Barack Obama. 

Obama nominated White for the position on January 24, lauding her distinguished career as the New York prosecutor who brought down American mobster John Gotti and put terrorists behind bars. 


"She found a way to try international terrorists in the court of law, which has never been done before," said Preet Bharara, US attorney in Manhattan. "She can figure out how to deliver for the American people at the SEC."


If approved by the Senate, White would replace outgoing Elisse B. Walter as Chairman of the SEC.
