The United Arab Emirates' highest court tries 94 activists on charges of trying to seize power. The suspects have allegedly formed a group that publicly taught the values of Islam but in secret sought to overthrow the state.
"They launched, established and ran an organisation seeking to oppose the basic principles of the UAE system of governance and to seize power," said a statement from Attorney General Salem Saeed Kubaish.
Some of the activists reportedly had links to foreigners, including the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood. The defendants deny the accusations.
The case has triggered complaints from human rights groups. "This is a continuation of repression here and in the region against citizens calling peacefully for political reform and more freedom," said an Emirati human rights activist.
