Deadline to appeal ruling in Nigerian farmers v Shell case
The parties involved in the case of five Nigerian farmers against Royal Dutch Shell face a deadline to appeal the verdict of The Hague Civil Court.
On January 30, Dutch judges rejected all but one of the cases against the oil giant, ruling that under Nigerian law, oil companies cannot be held responsible for damages unless they can be shown to have breached their duty of care.
The court did, however, order a subsidiary of Royal Dutch Shell, Shell Nigeria, to compensate one of the Nigerian farmers and announced the level of damages would be established at a later date.
