The chairman of the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Jon Leibowitz steps down, ending a four-year tenure during which the agency focused mainly on protecting consumer privacy.

Leibowitz joined the commission in 2004 and became its chairman in 2009. The announcement about his resignation came on February 1. 


Candidates to succeed Leibowitz as chairman include the FTC's two other sitting Democratic commissioners, Julie Brill and Edith Ramirez. The administration is allegedly also considering Howard Shelanski, head of FTC's economics bureau, and Philip J. Weiser, dean of the University of Colorado School of Law and a former antitrust official at the Justice Department.
