Iranian President meets Egypt's top Sunni cleric in effort to improve ties -

The president of the Shi'ite Islamic Republic of Iran Mahmoud Ahmadinejad meets with Egypt's top Sunni Muslim cleric Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayeb at Cairo's Al-Azhar University in a bid to improve ties with the Arab Republic. 


Ahmadinejad is the first Iranian president to visit Egypt since the 1979 Iranian revolution that disrupted the relations between the two Middle Eastern states. 


Following the meeting with al-Tayeb, Ahmadinejad is due to attend a two-day Islamic summit in Cairo.
