The agenda of the visit includes a stop in Bodh Gaya in Bihar, where the Sri Lankan president is scheduled to meet Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. Another stop will be made in Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh.
The Sri Lankan president is accused by Tamil parties of having killed thousands of innocent people in the war between Tamil tiger rebels and the country's authorities that ended in 2009.
The latest official visit of the Sri Lankan president to India took place in September 2012 and was greeted by protests on that occasion as well.
