The original smaller statue of the iconic raising of the US flag at the Iwo Jima's Mount Suribachi in 1945 is auctioned by the Bonhams house as part of a World War II artifacts auction.
"It's an incredibly iconic image of bravery," said Marci Reaven, vice president of historic exhibits at the New-York Historical Society. "It immediately captured Americans' imaginations, their hopes for victory and their fears at a difficult time," she added.
More known than the twelve and a half foot tall statue is the 32-foot-tall Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington, designed by American sculptor Felix de Weldon in 1954. The memorial depicts five Marines and a Navy Corpsman raising the flag at Iwo Jima as Allied forces captured the Japanese-held island.
