The head of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Benedict XVI, makes his first public appearance since the surprising announcement of his resignation on February 11.


Pope Benedict celebrates an Ash Wednesday mass at St. Peter's Basilica, his last public mass and one of his last engagements in the office before his farewell audience on February 27. 


The 85-year-old Pope will step down on February 28 due to his advancing age and health issues.
