The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) creates six testing sites for civilian and military drones across the US. The unmanned aircraft are to be tested in preparation for integration into US airspace, which is currently limited to manned planes.
The sites will evaluate what requirements are needed to avoid any collisions between the drones and manned aircraft.
"Our focus is on maintaining and improving the safety and efficiency of the world's largest aviation system," Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said in a statement. "This research will give us valuable information about how best to ensure the safe introduction of this advanced technology into our nation's skies."
The creation of the sites is also expected to boost the economy in areas in which they are located.
