Former Maldives president Mohamed Nasheed appears in court to face accusations that he illegally detained a judge during the last days of his administration. 


Nasheed took refuge in the Indian embassy in the country's capital to avoid arrest in connection with the court case. According to his supporters, the former president was ousted in a coup in February.


If found guilty and prosecuted, Nasheed could be barred from standing in the upcoming elections in Maldives, scheduled for September 2013.
