A group of pro-Kurdish politicians visits the jailed leader of the Kurdistan Working Party (PKK) in a crucial step to advance peace talks on ending a 28-year-old insurgency, which has killed more than 40,000 people to date.
The delegation to visit Abdullah Öcalan will consist of non-Kurdish leftist film-maker Sirri Sureyya Onder, Altan Tan, who has an Islamist background and Pervin Buldan, a long-time Kurdish female activist.
The PKK, which is considered a terrorist organization by Ankara, the United States and the European Union, is a guerrilla movement that has been fighting for the autonomy of Kurdistan and greater rights for Kurds in Turkey.
It is expected that Ocalan will call for a ceasefire via the delegation in exchange for reforms boosting the rights of Turkey's Kurdish minority.
