The Congolese teenage star Rachel Mwanza of the Oscar-nominated film Rebelle (War Witch) attends the Academy Awards ceremony after she was granted a US visa.
The Canadian submission in the foreign language film category tells the story of child soldiers in Africa.
Mwanza was named best actress for the lead role in Rebelle at both the Berlin and Tribeca Film Festivals.
"Abandoned by her family and living on the streets as a child, her [Mwanza's] life has been transformed by the making of the film," said Montreal film-maker Kim Nguyen in a statement. "To have her journey end on the red carpet is beyond anything she could have dreamed of."
