Egypt begins using smart cards to distribute gasoline and diesel in a step towards meeting the International Monetary Fund's (IMF) loan terms.
The country now sells many of its energy products at prices that are lower than the production costs. The objective of the smart cards is to reduce the amount of money spent on subsidized energy products.
The new scheme will first be introduced to tanker trucks and 2,870 gasoline stations. In July or August, the program will widen to include all car owners.
