The annual Kentucky Derby Festival is held in honor of the Kentucky Derby Horse Race, first initiated in 1935.

Held two weeks before the anticipated Kentucky Derby race, the festival features events such as The Great Balloon Race, The Great Steamboat Race, The Pegasus Parade and the Derby Marathon.

The event closes with Thunder over Louisville, the largest fireworks display in North America, following the final horse race.

The Kentucky Derby Race itself runs for only two minutes.
