The holiday was originated by the Islamic prophet Muhammad and falls on the first day of the month of Shawwal.
Muslim families traditionally celebrate the day with festive lunches or late breakfasts, eating sweet foods, wearing new clothes and giving gifts to children. It is forbidden to fast on the day of Eid.
A special Eid prayer is an inseparable part of the day and giving to the poor and needy is an obligatory act of charity before its attending.
