Known as the "Remover of Obstacles" and as the patron god for travelling, according to Hindu beliefs Ganesh is the god of good fortune, prosperity and wisdom.
He is one of the most popular deities for worship in all traditions of the faith, particularly to those who are embarking on a new enterprise or opening a new business.
In India it is marked in Bhadrapada, the sixth month of the Hindu lunar calendar. It is a public occasion in some parts of the country and a ten day long celebration is held for the festival. In other areas, it is celebrated at home. Hymns are sung, offerings are made to the god and sweets are distributed.
