The Avignon Festival is an annual arts festival held every summer in the courtyard of the Popes' Palace as well as other locations in the French city of Avignon.
The Festival d'Avignon draws the attention of professionals and amateurs from all over the world, and has over the years amassed a large number of faithful observers and commentators from France and abroad.
Considered as a major event, and a must see on the French theatrical calendar.
Frequently known locally as the Festival d'Avignon, the festival is known to consist of two parts, the "In" and the "Off".
Founded in 1947 by Jean Vilar, it is thought to be one of the oldest extant festivals of France and one of the greatest in that sense with over 949 performances during three weeks of festivity.
Five hundred journalists from the written and audiovisual press (local, regional, national and international) come each year to Avignon for the Festival.
