Van Rompuy's term as EU parliament President ends -

Herman van Rompuy's two and a half year term as president of the European Council ends.

After he was elected under the Treaty of Lisbon, he was appointed to chair the institution on December 1 2009.

Van Rompuy is the first long-term and full-time President of the European Council who has reached his maximum term as president.
