The Common Wealth Awards of Distinguished Service (or Common Wealth Awards) were created under the will of the late Ralph Hayes, an influential American business executive and philanthropist. Every year, four Awards are given in four among the following disciplines: Literature, Public Service, Government, Dramatic Arts, Mass Communications, Science, Invention and Sociology.
The Awards reward and encourage the best of human performance worldwide. They also provide an incentive for people to make future contributions to the world community.
The 2013 laureates are Martin Sheen for Public Service, Alan Alda Dramatic Arts, David McCullough for Literature and Jane Pauley for Mass communications.
