The CPJ International Press Freedom Award was established in 1991 to honour journalists, or their publications, that show courage in their cause to report the truth despite facing threats, attacks, torture or imprisonment.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) is an independent not-for-profit organisation that promotes press freedom around the world and works to allow journalists to report the news without the fear of reprisal. Occasionally, imprisoned award recipients accept the prize at a later ceremony. In 1994, it was awarded posthumously to the late David Kaplan.

This year's awardees are Mauri König (Brazil), Dhondup Wangchen (China), Azimjon Askarov (Kyrgyzstan) and Mae Azango (Liberia). Currently, two of the awardees are imprisoned, with Askarov serving a life sentence related to his coverage of official corruption and Wangchen serving a six-year term in prison after his documentation of Tibetan life under Chinese rule.
