Australian tobacco packaging laws come into effect
|
|
The government plans to lessen the attractiveness of the packaging to young people in order to further cut smoking rates.
The cigarettes will now be sold in olive green packets with graphic images warning against the consequences of smoking.
The measure has been strongly opposed by tobacco companies which have foreshadowed legal action arguing plain packaging breaches trademark law and amounts to confiscation of property.
Australia's new cigarette packaging laws are the first of their kind to be implemented in the world. However, some other countries such as New Zealand, India, the UK and some parts of the US are considering the implementation of similar laws in order to reduce the number of smokers.
