Christchurch commemorates the 2011 earthquake with a memorial service.
The Christchurch Earthquake Awards are given to recognise the bravery of those affected. At 12.51pm, two minutes of silence are held to honour the memory of the 182 victims of the earthquake.
The earthquake that hitChristchurch in 2011 had a destructive magnitude of 6.3 and was located 10kilometressouth-east of Christchurch, New Zealand's second-most populated city.
The earthquake hit the city a mere six months after another earthquake in Canterbury, with a magnitude of 7.1. Though of a greater magnitude, the Canterbury earthquake caused no fatalities.
Thetotal cost of rebuilding the damage done by the two major earthquakes is estimated to exceed NZ$20–30 billion.
