The African Union (AU) celebrates the annual Wangari Maathai Day to stimulate the preservation of the environment in Africa.
Originally called African Environmental Day, the AU decided in January 2012 to rename the day after the Kenyan environmentalist and Nobel Peace Prize winner Wangari Maathai.
