Saint Valentine's Day, commonly shortened toValentine's Day,is an annual celebration of love and affection.
It is traditionally a day on which lovers express their love for each other by presenting flowers, offeringconfectionery, and sendinggreeting cards.
Modern Valentine's Day symbols include theheart-shapedoutline, doves, and the figure of the wingedCupid. Since the 19th century, handwritten valentines have given way to mass-producedgreeting cards.
The day is named after one or more early Christianmartyrs namedSaint Valentine, and was established byPope Gelasius I in 496 AD. It wasdeletedfrom theGeneral Roman Calendarof saints in 1969 byPope Paul VI.
The day first became associated withromantic lovein the circle ofGeoffrey Chaucerin theHigh Middle Ages, when the tradition ofcourtly loveflourished.
