The Spingarn Medal is awardedannually by the NationalAssociation for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) for outstandingachievement by an African American.

The award, which consists of a gold medal, was createdby Joel Elias Spingarn, Chairman of the Board ofthe NAACP in 1914. It was first awarded to biologist Ernest E.Just in 1915, and has been given each year thereafter, with theexception of 1938.
