Malaysia holds general elections after Prime Minister Najib received consent from Malaysia's constitutional monarch to  dissolve  the country's parliament on April 3.

Observers expect that the coalition that has ruled for nearly 57 years will be challenged by a resurgent opposition whose pledges have resonated with the electorate.

Malaysia has a bicameral parliament consisting of the Senate and the House of Representatives. The Senate members are either appointed or elected indirectly.
The 222 members of the House of Representatives are all elected by direct popular vote and serve 5 year terms.
