The Greek revolution (war of independence) against the Ottoman Empire lasted for almost 9 years (1821-1830). It ended with the creation of an independent Greek state. March 25 is celebrated as a national holiday by the modern Greek state.

The revolution is celebrated throughout the country and by Greeks all over the world, with street parades.
