Icelanders vote in the country's parliamentary elections. Along with current mainstream parties, several new parties are contesting the election.

Iceland's parliament, the Althing, has 63 members, all of which will be elected by popular vote. A total of 32 seats is needed for a majority.

In 2009, the election was won Social Democratic Alliance, which eventually formed a coalition with Left-Green Movement. It was the first time that the Independence Party was not the largest party in the parliament.

Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir led the coalition as the first female Prime Minister of Iceland as well as the first openly lesbian head of government in the world.
